omg i’ve been so out of it but the moment i saw the bts of thranduil and how they FINALLY brought the necklace and statue to light… AND THAT THEY CONFIRMED THESE THREE THINGS:
1. The necklace was meant to be a gift for her
2. The statue was her
3. His coldness and grievance was because of the loss of his wife.
Warning: Incoming rant. I’m angry, it’s 3am, I’m tired and just plain fed up.
Look, I’ll be honest. I’ve been real quiet about this issue for the longest time even though I’ve had a good handful of people who have personally went out of their way to criticise my art or accuse me for creating “offensive material” because it did not portray the correct representation.
Before I begin, please STOP calling me a white inconsiderate bitch. I’m Euorasian and I’m pretty damn split when it comes to ethnicities, not to mention I’ve grown up all my life in Asia. Your presumptions are a pain and generally hurtful.
Now, I’m going to start with why I’m done so beyond done with this. I got this in my Etsy convo today:
There are two things I need to point out. Firstly, why has it become such a necessity to perpetually nitpick at every single POC or any character that does not fall under the category as ‘white’ or ‘average body shape to fit’? I fully understand the lack of diversity and the concept of white-washing but this is literally crossing the line. Not all Latinos are tanned. Not all Asians are ‘yellow’. Not all blacks are dark. You’re ironically stereotyping an ethnicity to one centralised look and that in itself is misrepresentation. Oscar is also a debatable case as well but I don’t want to touch that topic because that’s going to start a whole new argument altogether.
Secondly, why has it suddenly become obligatory that all fanart must now reflect upon the actor’s look? A lot of the times I switch my references between the movie and the comic or concept art looks, and sometimes I create my own version altogether. That’s the beauty of creating art or any content. You have all these options and creativity to explore. Yes, I understand if for instance, Poe’s character is supposedly a POC in the SW universe but this person has delved away from the point, referring strictly to the movie verse and simply decided that they’d go all out of their way to personally message me just to say I’ve failed to deliver their expected criteria.
By the way, here’s a fucking clearer close up for your perusal. Although it may be subtle, I did NOT recycle the same colour palette:
Look, the bottomline is, if I fail to deliver an ‘accurate portrayal’ of a POC or of a particular body shape, it is not because I am ignorant or shaming the character/person, this is either from the nature of my art style or this is me being artistically inept. I am not a perfect artist–hell I make a fuck ton of mistakes in technical aspects all the time. That’s why I try and practice, experiment and challenge myself some more. I’m open to constructive criticism and feedback because that’s the only way I’ll learn. But if you’re there to tell me ‘oh your nose is too narrow, you’re white washing!!!!!’ or ‘his skin isn’t tan enough!!!!’ then leave me the fuck alone man, find someone better that can meet your pretentious expectations. It’s so easy for you to just sit there, view the art I work for hours, spent thousands of dollars on equipment and art material, dedicated half of my lifespan I worked on harnessing my skills and you decide to criticise me for my lack of consideration.
And if this upsets you still, then go. Make. Your. Own. Fucking. Art. Instead. Of. Picking. On. Others.
